Wool Carpet Care – Three Ways for 30 Years’ Use and Enjoyment

The entrance of your home is a great place for a wool carpet, since this type of carpeting performs well in high-traffic areas because it is sturdy and can withstand the surplus moisture that can accumulate there. If you’re installing the carpet yourself, you may need to rent or buy special tools such as a knee kicker and power stretcher. These are three different ways to care for your wool carpet so it will last you a lifetime.

Vacuum Weekly
At least once every week vacuum your wool carpet, because dirt gets easily entrenched into the fibers. Use a vacuum cleaner that has a rotating brush. Use it on the highest floor setting so the brushes just scarcely touch the top of the carpet. Dust carpet powder on the surface before vacuuming to help pull up dirt and hair from the fibers.

Remove Stains Immediately
Wool stains easily and permanently if the stains are not removed promptly, meticulously and with good cleaning products. Spot clean with wool safe products. Different types of stains call for different products but an all-purpose mixture suggested by some wool carpet makers consists of a teaspoon of Woolite together with a teaspoon of white vinegar and a quart of warm water. When a spill occurs apply small quantities of the cleaning agent to a towel or cloth and blot, don’t rub, working your way from the rim of the spot inward.

Professional Cleaning
Lengthen your carpet’s life by having a professional clean it annually or bi-annually instead of waiting until it is over-soiled. Some cleaning methods and agents can permanently damage your wool carpet. A qualified carpet cleaner will reduce the likelihood of damage from improper cleaning. If you have an Oriental wool carpet or rug, it will need special handling since its natural dyes are likely to bleed.
