Knowing all you can about wood flooring prices is important, since hardwood floors are an investment in your home that will last for decades and bring warmth and beauty to any décor. There are a number of key things to think about when making the decision to install hardwood, including the kind of wood appropriate for your locality and the amount of traffic it will be required to handle. As you learn more about wood, beware of the myths circulating regarding its pricing. Here are two of these myths.

Wood Flooring Prices Myth No. 1 – Hardwood is Far More Costly than Wall-to-Wall Carpeting

Wood Flooring Fact:

The average cost per square foot for a properly maintained ¾" x 2" strip floor is seven cents per annum, and it will last about three hundred years. This would include having it recoated and re-sanded every so often. After twenty years fitted carpet will look washed-out and will have been professionally cleaned numerous times, never really restoring it. It will then be replaced, bringing its cost with maintenance to around thirty-five cents per square foot per year.

Wood Flooring Prices Myth No. 2 – Engineered Hardwood Floors are Less Expensive than Solid Wood Floors

Wood Flooring Fact:

Engineered wood floors vary in price from about four dollars to as much as thirty dollars per square foot. Floating wood floors are comparatively cheaper than glue-down products. Pricing depends on: the kind of hardwood, the dimensions of the floorboards, the width of the hardwood wear layer and the quality of the product and production method, amongst other variables.

When it comes to wood flooring prices, solids are usually cheaper than engineered with less pricey species. Solids become more costly than engineered as they use more of the expensive hardwoods. Installed costs are what matter, not upfront costs, and using pre-finished engineered is almost always cheaper than using unfinished solid.
