Recycled Leather – Floors, Accessories, Couches and More for Your Home
Recycled leather is a relatively new player on the market, first introduced by the firm Eastern Textiles and promoted to interior design firms, furniture manufacturers and various unique specialty markets in the United States. The manufacturing process of this leather consists of a woven polyester center, which carries higher performance strength than conventional leather.
The manufacturers of recycled leather take extensive measures to make sure that the finished product is biodegradable, and contain no formaldehyde or high levels of volatile organic compounds. For this reason, it can be used in a number of applications, including flooring and wall coverings. It’s available in glue-down formats or atop interlocking plank systems. Recycled leather floors and walls add a comfortable and warm environment in a home or commercial space.
Even the leather accessories you wear can be recycled into brand new ones. For example, you can go green by using an old leather belt to make yourself a choke style necklace or a bracelet. Just measure your wrist, subtract an inch and cut the belt to suit. Punch holes in each end of the leather, and tie a leather shoestring through the holes. You can make an anklet using the same directions. Another idea for a recycled leather belt is pet collars.
With accessories for Apple products being all the rage, one company is producing a rugged folio made of recycled leather, that’s sure to turn heads. Once inside, your phone’s edges bulge, creasing the leather all round, and giving the case a lovely, well-worn look.
Making new products from discarded leather can be fun, and it will save you money too, especially with the high cost of the material. Belts, wallet, luggage and jackets can all be rescued, restored and reused with leather conditioning products or dyes – a great way to make new items. You can braid the recycled leather to give it strength, or double layer it to produce thickness.
