- To determine the correct size of stove for your home start by calculating the square footage of the space you are trying to keep warm. As an example, a two-thousand square foot home is heated by a stove which is rated at 60,000 BTUs. A thirteen-thousand square foot home can be heated by a stove rated at 42,000 BTUs.
- Discover the local code regulations regarding pellet stove installation by contacting the local town office or city hall.
- Carefully consider the placement of your pellet stove. Chimneys and ventilation are a factor. The stove is typically located in a room where you spend a lot of time. Setting up fans to move the warm air around is a good idea to disperse the heat throughout the house.
- A professional assessment of the space selected for the stove is recommended. The inspection should include chimneys (if needed), floors and surrounding environment. The weight of the stove is also a factor for consideration as the floor beneath must be adequate to support it.
- Proper floor treatments need to include a non-flammable base to protect the floor from the heat of the stove and burning embers from wood pellets that could come into contact with it while tending a pellet stove.
