Landscaping

Eco-friendly landscaping is not only smart, but fairly easy to do. Here are some tips to help get your garden “green” or eco-friendly. This helps preserve the environment and makes it much more cost effective to care for your landscape when eco-friendly methods are put into practice.

Cut back on lawn space
Herbal lawns are not only more economical and carefree, they provide wonderful aromas that waft through the hot summer air adding a wonderful perfume to the areas they are planted in. herbal lawns do need trimmed occasionally, but not mowed. You put the mower away sooner and use less electric or fuel at the same time. Though herb lawns do not tolerate as much traffic as the traditional lawn, gravel walkways can be interspersed throughout the lawn to allow walkways that provide scented paths for your enjoyment. Stepping stones are also an alternative, giving you an artistic license to dress your lawn in many colors, styles and interesting forms. Deciding between a conventional lawn and a lawn of herbs is determined mostly by the functionality that you want your lawn to have. A velvety smooth green carpet is best obtained with the conventional lawn. A fragrant, flowered surface across your lawn is derived with the herb lawn. Water and fertilizer requirements are much less with an herb lawn making this type of lawn eco-friendly. Grass lawns need to be fed several times during the season and need lots of water, especially in hot weather or hot climates. The beautiful alternative to the traditional grass lawn is planting an herb lawn.

Use a Push Mower
Okay, quit groaning, muscle power is still the most energy efficient way to mow the lawn. Using a reel lawn mower not only will conserve energy, give you plenty of exercise, and it also assists in keeping the air cleaner.

Plant an Edible Landscape
Fruit trees, berry bushes, strawberries, and carrots are all ways you can enhance the appearance of the yard and provide fresh fruits or vegetables for your table. Organic foods grown by your own hand gives you a reward of health and beauty in the yard.

By using your imagination and muscle power, less water, no herbicides or pesticides, your landscape can become much friendlier to the environment and provide beauty that is breath taking. Your home can become the envy of the neighborhood as the sweet smells of the herbs waft into the air and the beauty of the flowers pleases the eye. Herbs are often used for erosion control on steep hillsides or areas that are flooded frequently. The roots of herbs are like a fibrous network that holds soil in place. Certain herbs are natural pesticides and this will reduce the runoff that ends up in the water table. An herbal lawn is the perfect answer to becoming more eco-friendly in your landscape.
