Non Toxic Wood Finish: Three Secrets Used By Professional Decorators

It has never been more essential to make a difference with non toxic wood finish and paint. Chemicals are everywhere in America and the world, from Mumbai to New York to Southern California. Petrochemicals have traditionally dominated the paint and wood finish industry. It’s more important than ever to know how to finish wood floors without using toxic products.

Here are three secrets to finishing hardwood floors and furniture using non toxic materials

  1. Look for products that combine beeswax and mineral oils

These products make a great non toxic wood finish that you can even use on toys and food quality wooden bowls. They are excellent for sealing wood, keeping it water repellent, and giving wood a nice protective finish. You can even make your own non toxic wood finish by heating 1 cup of mineral oil and adding a chunk of beeswax that is one-fifth of the total volume of oil used.

  1. Use shellac

Shellac is a natural resin produced by an insect that lives in trees, mostly in India. It has been used for centuries as a non toxic wood finish by dissolving it in denatured alcohol and painting it on like any other finish. It’s easy to use, just sand and clean the wood you want to finish, and paint on the shellac following the wood grain with a two- or three-inch brush.

  1. Use penetrating oil finishes

Penetrating wood finishes get soaked into the wood, acting as a sealant and protecting the wood. Three types of oil are used: linseed, generally used on exterior wood siding and log homes, tung oil, commonly used in home interiors, and Danish oil finishes, mostly used on interior doors and trim like wood shutters.

Any one of these durable wood finishes will enhance the warmth and richness of your floors and furniture without compromising your health or the environment.
