Choosing Eco-Friendly Paint: Things to Look For in Low-VOC Coatings
Conservationists and some health specialists say that the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in many paints and other coatings increase indoor air pollution and may be carcinogenic. Petroleum-based paint can release VOCs for years after it dries. Eco friendly paint, on the other hand, can have 200 grams of volatile compound per liter at the most. So how do you choose the best type of eco-friendly paint for your project? Here’s how you can find the best low-VOC paints for your money:
Buy only eco friendly paint that either contains low or zero VOCs. There are a handful of companies that produce strictly eco friendly paint. These paints are produced in an entirely new way, which means that they have all the permanence of deadly oil-based paints, but without any of the contaminants and VOCs.
Make sure your paint meets the government standard. “Low-VOC” paint must meet the EPA standard. Also, look for paints certified by Green Seal, a nonprofit group committed to improving environmental standards for paint and other products.
Use lighter colors. Your hardware store will add pigment to your paint once you select a color. This pigment is full of VOCs. Lighter colors contain less pigment, while deeper colors such as reds and browns use a significant amount of pigment.
Do your research. Seek advice from an eco-retailer, green architect, or an eco-savvy contractor for reputable brands. Stay away from biocides, mildewcides, preservatives, additives, and other miraculous boosters to prevent chemical sensitivities. The easiest way to find a truly eco friendly paint is to look at the ingredients listed on the tin. You should try to find a paint that has all-natural, identifiable items listed as the main ingredients. If you see unrecognizable scientific names or numbers listed in the first few ingredients, steer clear.
